Pupils start off by looking at World War One as a transformative event in
recent history. They consider the significant political and social changes that came from this event such as the demise of old empires and the formation of new countries, the advancement of technology and the the growth of civil rights.

They look at the Russian Revolution and the formation of the Soviet Union and the rise of the USA in global influence. The Class then look at Civil Rights in the USA in particular and consider important events and people in the Civil Rights Movement (Jim Crow Laws, The Harlem Renaissance, Little Rock High School,
Freedom Fighters and Marches and Protest in Sport).

The class also take one of the Literacy Tests for Voter Registration that were used in the South. They briefly look at the Cold War, the Nuclear Race and the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The pupils recite two poems A Brave and Startling Truth by Maya Angelou and One Way Ticket by Langston
Hughes to illustrate some of the aspects of what is studied.
