The History of Art Main Lesson explores the impulses behind the artistic endeavours of human beings and the development of human consciousness through artistic expression.
It is typically delivered in two sections with prehistoric art through to that of the mediaeval times being studied and the second section of the Main Lesson, covering Art from the
beginning of the Renaissance through to the early 20th century.
There is an emphasis on observation and interpretation as the class examines a wide range of images from cultures across the world and seek to deepen their powers of perception and their ability to form judgements.
Pupils are introduced to, and encouraged to use, specific terminology to discuss artistic qualities, as well as seeing different artistic movements in an historical context.
This Main Lesson includes a Class trip to the National Gallery of Scotland.
