My project is about my journey in sailing and how I intertwined the mythology of mermaids and how they are ‘part of your world’ but instead I decided to take the typical gender roles and swap them. So therefore I have used my classmate as my model to be the base for my ‘merman’.
I wanted to swap the gender roles as the history with mermaids depicts women in a deceptive and cruel way. So I thought why not do it with men?
I didn’t just want to show the gender swap but also capture one, as I took inspiration from Kikj Smith who depicts an entrapped mermaid in a slaughterhouse.
I wanted to show the effect that the weather at sea makes. I used soft tones and mediums in the beginning to convey calm and it gradually got stormy to convey the emotion and the loss of control over the elements
